a book of poetry

songs of life

poems by Miloš Mijić

//

i poured out my heart onto these pages

please treat it with kindness

as if you would a closest friend

for it is a delicate and fragile thing

one stern jab could throw it off balance

and make a mess of everything

trees

as i emerge through the rusty trees

and branches of old, heavy and big

into the meadow draped in green

and skies dripping with glee

i see myself in the scarlet iris

of people past and gone

and i think to myself

be gentle in this breeze

do not rush it or destroy your dreams

lend a helping hand towards yourself

and lift your soul onto your shoulders

so it forever sings

of this sweet life and everything it brings

peace

peace is so elusive

it is made of stardust and abandoned dreams

or perhaps being grounded in the now without release

with steady breathing and a pretty sky

whether it's dark or bright

it always offers us a choice

waiting for us to reach out

if you let your thoughts fly

you can burn bright and lose sight

of the beauty and wonder before you

and the sea of crashing waves brewing inside

try to reconcile the two

and it might amaze you

to find that we're all the same

deep down we all yearn for love

love is the very essence of existence

it moves the stars across the galaxy

and ships use it to power their sails

you can hear it in every song

and catch a glimpse of it in a beam of light

in your best friend's laughter

in a calf's first graze

gladiators fight for it

and some die to honor it

purple

cry now and let it all out

your tears fall and cascade like shooting stars

but the moment is too late

i have left it all behind

obscured by the yellow brambles

and lost in the everchanging grove of memories

they bring joy and sorrow alike

for we do not choose the direction of our heart

it always finds its own way

and all we can do is sit and obey

please give me courage

i seem to short on that as of late

the purple sky speaks to me now

and i always smile back

in an attempt to enjoy the ride

i keep fighting back

it comes and goes in waves

this spite and the haze

for when i return

my heart will be smothered for days

i will fight to keep it that way

roads

just keep looking through the lens

and grab the beam of light by the hand

ride the wave of emotions high

until you reach the point of no return

thinking about the past and the future

always chasing the now

it's so hard getting there

these wild thoughts keep up the fight

but I never give up and lash out

creeping inwards ever closer

the way always disappears from underneath

and below i find countless others

the choice is there only to fool us

breaking the cycle forces us to look up

where there are no roads

only green-lit leaves and moss

and a gentle breeze

to exist in this world is a gift indeed

free

lord, lend me your strength

in order to defeat this siege

i sit alone with my thoughts

arms outreached

the galaxy permeating my soul

into each star i plant a seed

one of love and understanding

in time they will all sprout a beautiful tree

and when their roots reach me

i will turn my gaze within

where the whirlpool of shadows still turns

if it try to fight it, it screams and hurls

suddenly i spot a tiny withered beam of light

it still faintly shines in the belly of the beast

this time, i am ready to give it love and kindness

for this is what it truly needs

not swords, anger, and endless greed

i will safely guide it back home

where its heart beats as my own

i am now finally free

darkness

in the darkness i lie alone and face my fears

the distant red light gently calls my dreams

while i drift away into a sleepless night

hoping for someone to give me respite

o, wise spirit in the corner of my room

will you say something to ease my gloom?

for thousands of years I've roamed the earth

no more than a whisper, a gust of wind

a sleight of hand, a word misused

in a moonlit pond i find my reflection

only to look away confused

o, holy spirit that envelopes my soul

why must i always end up on my own?

even though i feel your presence and its glow

still i find myself lower than ever before

and while my eyes slowly fall to the floor

i cannot ignore the love that permeates my soul

my heart was forged in it, don’t you know?

it dictates my mood and the way i breathe

i bathe in it and let it wash away my fears

but i keep wondering–am i too broken to be loved and held dear?

the lock

i still take the keys out of the lock

every night before i go to bed

just in case you decide to drop by

and wake up the magic

be careful not to scare it away

our love is just hiding but it is still there

i still take the keys out of the lock

every night before i go to bed

just in case you wanted to slip under

the warm and soft sheets

between the pillows and old jokes

a spark is being lit

i still take the keys out of the lock

every night before i go to bed

just in case you missed me

and all those slow mornings

with me pressed against your back

and your neck begging to be kissed

i still take the keys out of the lock

every night before i go to bed

and i imagine my life with you beside me

even if it is hard and thorny

it is still better than the pouring rain

let’s make it shine before it is too late

echo

under the shadow of the tree

carelessly whispering into my ear

the echo of your love that once was

washing away my pain

endlessly into the sea

ignite

suffering this burden of woe until the end of time

this kingdom of ruin, of misguided hope and dreams

there is nothing left but to wait and persevere

until your love ignites my soul, and sets me free

made of stone

all the splendour of this world will not replace

what was crumbled by you

to still live and to ponder

all that could have been

all that i could have done

i will never return home

as my heart is now made of stone

her

grant me her soul and i will grant you untold riches

riches that will never shine as bright as her eyes

riches that will never sing as loud as her voice

riches that will never outlast her beauty

riches that will never be as priceless as her soul

burden

i seek your reflection in the darkness

but i am met with my hope and desperation

how can i overcome this burden

when it also gives me love and light

if i am to survive, i must let go

run away and give up the fight

never to return, never to return

remember me

all that i am, all that is me

once i am gone and with me all my pain and sorrow

will they think of me?

will they remember me?

will the roots of my soul reach far down into the bowels of the earth

setting forth a new life, a bright star, cosmic love?

or will they wither away with the passing of time?

into oblivion, into nothing

breathe

my reflection is weighed heavily down

to be drowned, tired of adventure

tired of the ocean, and the story

ever so slowly, ever so gently

not to disturb the waves underneath

ever fluctuating and ever changing

the bottom will at once reveal

all that i cherish still lives and breathes

howl

to carry a broken promise

is the greatest burden of all

permeating your core

invading your thoughts

the trust that was given will form a hole

it will howl at the moon and devour the sun

nothing can stop it in its tracks

besides true love

to love

to love is to sacrifice, to carry a heavy burden

to understand, to compromise

to give space, to set free

to admire, to never falter

to respect, to cherish

to hear, to be heard

to yearn, to burn bright

to protect until the end of time

to disappoint, to breathe a sigh of relief

to love is the greatest privilege

cheers, love

secret world

where our bodies ended, our souls touched

they danced like two drops of rain

until the morning sun came and swept us away

the secret world only two can share

invisible to the naked eye

yet stronger than any force

binding, coalescing, infinite

now only there to be remembered and yearned

kinder dreams

as the memories twist and turn so do my sheets

dragging along all that was left behind

heavy, unrelenting, and stiff

such is my tired heart

and yet it desires to be gentle and free

it desires heights unknown and kinder dreams

dog

as lost as a sailor at sea

holding his head in his hands

the keel trudging through the engulfing waves

the dog star nowhere to be found

what will guide him home now

other than song and memory

the sweet allure of the spirits

and the hope to lay his eyes upon his dear

he yearns to hold her in his embrace

terrified he will never see it

her light and warmth reflected in his tired gaze

she will make the rain disappear

she will wash away the pain

she will soothe his pangs and mend his broken hands

she will heal his soul, make it whole again

and all we have left to do now is pray

friend

the moments we shared still linger

the smile in your eyes never fades

i can still feel your loving fingers running across my face

i need my friend now more than ever

to guide me through this storm

because i cannot do it myself anymore

until i find my way i must rely on memories alone

and then come out the other end stronger than before

desire

sheets soaked with trepidation

hands shaking, thoughts

that drive you to the bone

to blame yourself

to live alone

my desire sleeps eternally

like a growing feeling of emptiness

the fading light, our very last touch

now the morning comes like falling silk

do not leave me lying, throw me a bone

come back, give in to my song

bleeding heart

when we did meet

a place devoid of all darkness

my bleeding heart was destroyed

in the light cast by your soul

where the stone cuts the river

and the mirror reveals my shattered throne

the past is a bridge to nowhere at all

beneath the bright blue sky

i will find another whole

weight

when the weight of it all crashes into you

look deep inside

what you will find might surprise you

a love supreme, a new-found kindness

a calm mind, a profound perspective

it will always pull you forward

towards the light, but never look back

keep your faith strong

and your head up

faith

sometimes, and only sometimes

life will be kind

it will give you what you have longed for

for so long

it won't ask for anything in return

but faith

boy

when i was a boy

i felt an inexplicable longing

i felt unconditional love for someone

i didn't know

as if there were an invisible thread

connecting us

i spent too many years looking for it

at some point i forgot about it

and buried it

but the moment our lips touched

for the first time

it all came back to me

and i immediately knew

without any doubt

you were that someone

dying

last night i woke up from a nightmare

unspeakable terrors

i called out your name

but you weren't there

it was utterly hopeless

stuck in an endless dark hallway that

forever tightened its grip around me

when I finally snapped out

you were there like a beacon of light

you kissed and consoled me

and i thought

is this what it finally felt like to be afraid of dying?

today

today you leave in a hurry

i want to ask you about it

but you're gone too quickly

before I could make my move

today you wave goodbye

as you're leaving out the door

i want nothing more than to kiss you

but your lips are now too distant

today you don't tell me

about all the things bothering you

i want to hug you

but I cannot reach you

today i think about what i did wrong

and if i hurt you

i want to make it right

but cannot find the words to soothe you

today i asked the wrong question

i meant no harm

i just want to understand you better

but you don't seem to know that

today i wonder if i’m too much

i want to be there for you

i’m scared of pushing you away

but i tell myself it’s going to be okay

punches

the universe keeps throwing its punches

and i take them on the chin

one day i’ll find the courage

and finally jab it

the universe keeps whispering into my ear

and i pay attention

one day i’ll find my voice

and shout back at it

the universe keeps sending its messages

and i keep receiving them

one day i’ll find the words

and write a book to spite it

the universe keeps playing its tunes

and i listen

one day i'll find the right notes

and sing a song about it

the universe keeps fumbling its words

and i stay confused

one day i'll find meaning

and i won't second-guess it

the universe keeps being beautiful

and i stare in awe

one day i'll find the time

and scrawl a poem to celebrate it

gentle love

i want to give you a gentle love

one that will protect your heart

and nurture your soul

louden your happiness

and never bore

a love that will be honest and pure

like a child laughing

it will be your safe haven during a storm

and the first ray of light at dawn

the kind of love that understands and listens

never selfish or rude

it will put the wind in your sails

and inspire you to do good

winter

your smile keeps the bees busy

during the coldest days of winter

making them believe the sun’s shining

o, how it increases their pining

your voice makes the flowers

raise their tired petals

thinking the spring's finally here

but they'll have to wait before their heads can rear

your eyes calm even the

the most fearsome of westerlies

turning them mild and meek

o, how they hate it when you peek

your touch melts the snow

sheltering the undulating hills

of my savage heart

igniting an unrelenting spark

résumé

i don’t want your résumé

i’ve seen the person behind those eyes

you’re more than a piece of paper

don’t tell yourself otherwise

count your troubles up

put them in a line

i’m sure you won’t see the end of it

take them on one at a time

i know you’re stressed

and just getting by

if we do this together

the time might just fly

i hope to see the world your way

with gentle words I choose to say

to see a soul both kind and bare

never-ending thoughts ensue

letter to past self

sorry for being too hard on you

i could never choose the right words

sorry for trying to ruin your hopes and dreams

i never believed in them

sorry for judging you too harshly

i didn't think it would affect your mood

sorry for not taking care of your body

i didn't particularly like it

sorry for not being there when you needed me

i was busy helping others

sorry for not being able to forgive you

even though i forgave everyone else

sorry for not being kind

even though I treated everyone with kindness

sorry it took me so long to love you

i am here now, i won't leave

lean your head on my shoulder and weep

please tell me about all the things i’ve missed

poetry

in my mind you became poetry

it happened so quickly I couldn't breathe

opening my heart to you felt so real

i did it without thinking

i was at ease

i wish I could bend the will

of all the stars in the world

to spell your name across the sky

to prove to the heavens

that you burn brighter

than all of them combined

the view

when we're all alone

and you're in awe of the view

i see no reason to look past you

you're always more beautiful, it's true

everything

when you look at me

and i’m at a loss for words

it's not that i have nothing to say

it would just take me an eternity

to say everything

so i stop and breathe in the air

and look at you one more time

before i drift away

wildest dreams

when you're in my embrace

and it feels like home

i often forget you're real

because I couldn't have thought you up

in my wildest dreams

wilderness

i set forth into the unbridled wilderness

into the land of forgotten dreams and broken promises

will i ever find the way home

or i am doomed to walk this earth alone

such is the way of life

the way of the kind soul

the way of the truthful and the merciful

feet

i hope to stop falling one of these days

it seems like forever at this stage

why do i always stumble

even though i try my hardest

maybe one day my feet will reach the ground

and i will finally be safe and sound

mother

i am forever grateful

for your boundless sacrifice

for your river of tears and dedication

and your selfless love

i hope to one day be able to love with such a full heart

for it pulses to the rhythm of life itself

with blazing passion

never does it miss a beat or forget to be meek

belong

i am shaken to the core

i do not want to lose you

and lead a quiet life

without your laughter

i feel like i belong to you

but you do not belong to me

misery

i am frozen in my tracks

a frightened animal

what the future holds is a mystery

please save me from this misery

why do i so often groan

instead of showing kindness and affection

when will i learn how to be a better person

before i run out of time

and you run out of love

you

i see you in the smallest blade of grass

in the lush leaves of a tree

i see you in the creek that has run past

these weathered rocks

for a thousand years

i see you in the flowers that bloom

in each star that hangs in the night sky

i see you in the birds

dancing across the horizon

in the warm embrace of the sun

i see you in the coldest depths of winter

in the withered petals of apricot trees in fall

i see you in the blossoming spring

in the gentle summer breeze

caressing the raging seas

i see your reflection in each phase of the moon

in the fading embers of the day's last embrace

i see you in the grooves of moss-ridden fallen trees

in the smallest grain of sand

in every heartbeat, whisper, and dream

i see you in a stranger’s random act of kindness

in the lifelong bond between friends

i see you in every passing melody and its refrain

at the end and beginning of each poem

in between stanzas, choreographies, and stages

i see you on the pages that were never written

and those that are yet to be

i see you in the main spotlight

in the far sideline

in the lush verdant green

i see how you move with grace

how your hair compliments your face

your radiant smile, it never fails to brighten my day

i see how you talk with your eyes

i surrender, to no avail

i see how you sigh when no one is looking

and how you nod to yourself

as if to say–it’s going to be okay

i see how you laugh, bold and bright

with you by my side, i’ll never give up the fight

i see how you bare your soul to me

in the middle of the night

the silhouette of your face

so defined, and yet concealed

its mystery is gently revealed

i see you riding your bike, proud and free

the way you cross the street, like poetry

i see you dancing across the room, with childlike wonder and glee

and when you close your eyes

i think to myself, what could it possibly be?

i see how time stops when we are together

and how the space between us stretches thin

i see supermassive black holes colliding while we kiss

and whole galaxies pirouetting around us, stumbling

when we fall in each other’s arms, pure bliss

i see your kind heart, with its delicate cracks

a boundless landscape that shapes your soul

not a single change would i impart, for you are a work of art

because i see you, for you

and nothing can ever change that

ljubav

ljubav je kao vatromet koji čujem ali ne vidim

a svaka pojedinačna ćelija u mom telu

zove te

traži te

ide prema tebi

celo moje biće

vuče se kroz univerzum kako bi te pronašlo

a ti si još uvek tu, samo postojiš

samo po koja uspomena

i lep trenutak

a ja zaostajem

i tražim put

nazad na čistinu

i svetlucavu pučinu

Back to home
